Darts and Arts

So, Kiddy Land is coming, but it will have to wait. I had some pics on my work computer that I wanted to get uploaded while I was thinking of it and before they block this site.

Whoever controls the servers that all the schools use has started blocking sites. I understand things like most of the major torrent sites, but not innocuous things like gamefaqs and blogger are being blocked. I keep finding new stuff every day. Since I surf the web far and wide, in the course of making lessons, I expect this to be a pain in the near future.

Anyway, for the month of September I was working on the theme of the Olympics. Each week we had a sub-theme and then a related activity. The first week was general Olympics in the first session and then we went outside and had a footrace, long jump, and disc throw. The second piece was Baseball. We had a lesson and then went and played Kickball. I was told Baseball was too dangerous because they might throw the bats. That was followed by bicycles and a bike race. Good times. The last, and best, piece was Archery/Darts.

We mocked up a dart board by using a thin piece of styrofoam. Il-kyu printed out a blank board and we let them fill it in. There were usually bonuses for their team near the center and detriments for them near the outer edge.

Our darts were chopsticks, rubber bands, a tooth pick, and a tail made from oragami paper.

It worked pretty well and everyone had a great time. These lessons are only for 3rd - 6th grade though. I had the 2nd graders that week and thought they might like to play as well. Our lesson was on animals so I took a bunch of animal pictures and taped them on.

Unfortunately the tape made it very hard to pierce the board.

When they did get a shot, it was a big deal! In order to claim the points they had to say the animal's name.

This month, we're working on American holidays. One of the lessons this week is on Valentine's Day, Mother's day, and Father's day. It's a brief lesson with a little bit of vocabulary. The associated activity is making a card for their Mother, Father, Friend, or just somebody special. The goal is to keep them busy and happily using, and writing, English. So far it's gone well. I've received two of the cards myself. One of them was rather special and is presented below.

Hyun Jae is a boy by the way. In case you couldn't figure it out.

With Top Class we've been doing "Dramas". They're just short little plays. Most of them are really hacked-up, funky versions of English fairy tales. For example, Santa shows up at the end of 'Snow White and Her Friends' and asks what every one wants. My co-teacher got the scripts off of some DVD he has. They're wacky. But, the kids are coming along decently. Here's our most recent effort.

Okay, that's it for this one. Kiddy Land will be up sometime in the near future. Please look forward to it with much antici...
